OVERVIEW:  Winston Chen and his wife Phyllis move their philanthropy through the Paramitas Foundation, which supports universities, environmental, and community service organizations.  Since 1992, Paramitas has set up numerous scholarships and research projects at universities, including Stanford University. 

BACKGROUND: Winston H. Chen graduated with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University in applied mechanics and applied mathematics. He worked at IBM and later served on the board of Intel. He joined Solectron in 1980, serving as executive vice president and then CEO and chairman of the board. Chen later established Paramitas Investment Corporation.

ISSUES:

 EDUCATION & YOUTH: Since 1992, Paramitas Foundation has set up numerous scholarships and research projects at Stanford University, Harvard University, Santa Clara University, California State University, University of Vermont and National Cheng Kung University.

Chen sits on the board of The Harker School in San Jose. The couple are Harker School parents and support the institution through their foundation. Other grantees include Epiphany School and Treehouse School.

COMMUNITY: The couple supports Senior Taiwanese Association of California, and human services organization Northwest Harvest in Seattle.

GLOBAL: Grantees include Water First International, Global Partnership, and Tzu Chi Foundation, a Taiwanese international humanitarian organization and NGO.

RELIGIOUS: The couple met in the Yun Lin Temple in Berkeley and continue to support the outfit via their foundation. Other grantees include Buddhist Society of America.
