PROFILE: Dave Peery is the son of billionaire real estate developer, Richard Peery. He has made headlines with big grants to local schools, athletic centers, and youth causes. He’s well known on the local giving scene for creating an energetic foundation and a strong platform for large-scale giving. Peery’s bio on the Peery Foundation website shares:
Dave Peery is the Managing Director of the Peery Foundation, a family foundation based in Palo Alto, California. The Peery Foundation invests in and serves social entrepreneurs and leading organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world. Dave is a regular speaker and blogger, advocating for common sense approaches to funding and serving social entrepreneurs. He is a founding member of Big Bang Philanthropy and various other funder collaboratives. Dave holds a BA in Latin American Studies from Brigham Young University and served a two-year church mission in Paraguay. He currently resides in Bainbridge Island, Washington with his wife Lillie and their five children.
Peery offered insights into his approach to philanthropy in a 2013 article in the Stanford Social Innovation Review. He wrote:
At the Peery Foundation, we think of grantees as our customers and act accordingly. We’re not investing enough resources on our own to solve social issues at a systemic level, so we try to focus on our core function: to invest in social entrepreneurs and leading organizations. This means we leave the big, hairy problem-solving to grantees and focus on how to create a funding environment that better enables their success.
