IP TAKE: Program officers at Parsons operate as generalists and weigh in on all grant proposals. That said, Brewer is the guy there with a background in healthcare.

PROFILE: When Brewer joined the foundation in 2013, he brought more than 15 years of philanthropic grantmaking experience with him.

Before teaming up with the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Brewer helped distribute the May & Stanley Smith Charitable Trust money to worldwide organizations working to improve health services, clean water, sanitation, microfinance, and education. Brewer also put his philanthropic skills to use at the Archstone Foundation as its director of programs. Archstone's primary objective is to meet the needs of elderly citizens and the aging population. Before Archstone, Brewer worked for San Diego's Alliance Healthcare Foundation, where he was in charge of infectious disease programs and collaborative regional funding.

Brewer has dual master’s degrees: one in Social Work and Public Health from San Diego State University, and one in Business Administration from University of California, Irvine. He also completed the Council on Foundation Career Pathway Program in 2010-2011.

Just to be clear: It hasn't been all health care, all the time for Brewer. He previously served on the board of New City Public Schools, which is a charter school network in the Long Beach community.

But Brewer likely has a strong hand in Pasrons' health grant making, including recent support of $50,000 to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association; $45,000 to South Bay Children's Health Center for their dental clinic; $50,000 to the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence for "the training of nursing doctoral candidates specializing in the care of military veterans"; and $150,000 to Santa Teresita "toward a capital campaign for an assisted living cottage."
