K. Sujata is a strong advocate for women and girls with broad experience in Chicago’s philanthropic, business and nonprofit communities. She has served as president and CEO of Chicago Foundation for Women since 2011, a grantmaking organization focused on basic rights and equal opportunities for women and girls in the greater Chicago area. Sujata led the foundation through double digit growth, managing a strategic alliance with the former Eleanor Foundation in 2012.
Sujata has worked at several notable nonprofit agencies in Chicago: director of programs for the Eleanor Foundation, executive director of Apna Ghar, director of Chicago Continuum of Care (now Chicago Alliance to End Homelessness), and director of planning and development at Interfaith Housing Development Corporation.
Before joining the nonprofit sector, Sujata trained as a scientist at Northwestern University, received an MBA from IIT, and studied engineering in her native India. Sujata serves on the Board of the Donors Forum, Women’s Funding Network and the Steering Committee of the Asset Funders Network. Sujata is the President and CEO of Chicago Foundation for Women, a grantmaking organization focused on basic rights and equal opportunities for women and girls in the greater Chicago area, since 2011. Under her leadership, the foundation has experienced double-digit growth.
In 2012, Sujata was instrumental in bringing the assets, programs and key leadership of the Eleanor Foundation to Chicago Foundation for Women to create the Eleanor Network at Chicago Foundation for Women. Her prior experience includes program development in women’s economic security, ending homelessness and addressing domestic violence.
Sujata has worked with several notable nonprofit agencies in Chicago. She has been the Director of Programs at the Eleanor Foundation (now part of Chicago Foundation for Women) where she was instrumental in developing and implementing the foundation’s unique program aimed at the economic self-sufficiency of low income working women. As the Director of the Chicago Continuum of Care (now part of AllChicago), Sujata was responsible for implementing Chicago’s Plan to End Homelessness.
Sujata started her career in nonprofits as the Executive Director of Apna Ghar (Our Home), a domestic violence agency serving immigrant battered women and their children. There she succeeded in turning around the organization from having deficits to tripling its revenue.
Sujata brings her skills from manufacturing and academia to nonprofits. She earned an MBA from IIT and a Ph.D, in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University.
