PROFILE: As Executive Director of the American Theatre Wing, Heather A. Hitchens oversees one of the most famous arts awards shows, the Tonys, named after Antoinette Perry, an actor, director and co-founder of the organization. Year round though, Hitchens is responsible for the American Theatre Wing's grant-making, professional development, educational, and media programs. These areas include the National Theatre Company grants, Jonathan Larson grants, "Working In The Theatre," (a series of televised discussions with theatre leaders), and SpringboardNYC, a summer intensive course for college students transitioning into careers in the performing arts.

Heather A. Hitchens is a nationally recognized arts leader with nearly 20 years of performing arts administration, policy, and program development experience.

Hitchens began her tenure as Executive Director of the American Theatre Wing in July of 2011. As the Wing’s chief executive officer, she is charged with maintaining its brand of excellence in the Tony Awards as well as overseeing and shaping its other vital grant making, professional development, educational, and media programs.

Hitchens came to the Wing after a four-year term as Executive Director of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the largest state arts agency in the country. An appointee of Governor Eliot Spitzer, Hitchens oversaw the distribution of over $123 million in grants to more than 2,000 New York State organizations in every artistic discipline while at NYSCA. She also fostered closer collaboration and partnerships between the arts and other sectors including tourism, economic development, and parks, and in collaboration with a number of public and private funding sources, launched the New York State Cultural Data Project, which is developing more comprehensive and reliable data about the impact of the arts in the state.

Prior to her leadership of NYSCA, Hitchens served as President of the renowned national arts service organization Meet The Composer for nearly a decade. There, she revitalized the organization’s artistic programs and strengthened its financial standing by establishing a multi-million dollar endowment fund and fostering a many-fold increase in individual giving. Hitchens also served as CEO of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra and worked in the development department of the American Music Theatre Festival.

A percussionist since the age of six and a lifelong lover of the performing arts, Hitchens holds a M.S. in Arts Administration from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA and a B.M. in Percussion/Music Business from DePauw, Greencastle, IN.


Sean Elwood, Creative Capital

PROFILE: Besides being an occasional curator, collector, publisher, writer, and painter on his own time, Sean Elwood is first and foremost the current Director of Programs and Initiatives for Creative Capital, a title he assumed in 2010. His bio on LinkedIn shares:

Prior to Creative Capital, he was Curator/Collection Manager for the Seattle Arts Commission, Director at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, and Manager of the Art Residency Program at Centrum Foundation. He founded SEEDITIONS Art Publishing Company and Fuller/Elwood Gallery in Seattle. He currently serves on the board of Triple Canopy, and on advisory boards for Lower East Side Printshop, Watts House Project and the Dieu Donné Papermill. 

For over 35 years, Sean has made, bought, sold, published, restored, collected, donated, traded, studied, curated, written about, talked about, thought about, and otherwise facilitated the creation of artworks while spending most of his time in the company of artists. Emilya Cachapero, Theatre Communications Group

PROFILE: Theater Communications Group (TCG) is a multifaceted organization with many moving parts. More than a few of those moving parts are aimed specifically at financing a number of different branches in the theater arts through various philanthropic partnerships, fellowships, and grants. TCG Director of Artistic Programs Emilya Cachapero is one of those people at the center coordinating and administering these awards and grants. She is the one who manages all of the grant programs and international programs, as well as selected special projects. Her Howl Round bio shares: 

Emilya Cachapero is the director of Theatre Communications Group’s Artistic and International Programs and has been active in the US arts community for more than 30 years.  Ms. Cachapero oversees TCG’s grant programs, international programs and selected special projects which include Beyond Orientalism, a national initiative to address the use of yellow face, brown face and whitewashing.  She is a member of the Executive Board and Council of International Theatre Insitute (ITI) Worldwide, and as lead producer for ITI’s New Project Group (NPG) she produced House-Home, an eleven country collaboration that was performed in Xiamen, China in 2011, IfDENTITY, a ten-country collaboration that was performed in Madrid in 2008 and The Borges Project, a ten-country collaboration performed in Manila in 2006.  In addition to her current responsibilities with TCG and ITI-U.S., Ms. Cachapero was a US National Commissioner to UNESCO from 2002 - 2008.  Prior to joining TCG in 1991, she served as general manager for the Concordia Chamber Symphony; associate director of the Non-Traditional Casting Project in New York; conservatory administrator for American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco; and chair of the artistic committee for the Asian American Theater Company in San Francisco.  She was instrumental in creating the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival and was its founding producer for the first two years of the program.  Her writing has been published in American Poetry Review and several poetry anthologies.  Ms Cachapero received her Bachelor of Arts degree in creative writing from San Francisco State University and an honorary M.F.A. from the American Conservatory Theater. She is an alumna of the James P. Shannon Leadership Institute. 

Cate Fox, MacArthur Foundation

PROFILE: Cate Fox is a senior program officer at the MacArthur Foundation. Her foundation bio shares: 

Cate oversees the arts & culture in the Chicago Commitment program area.
Most recently, Cate served as a senior consultant at The Alford Group, a consulting firm to the nonprofit community. Over nearly seven years with Alford she helped a diverse set of nonprofit organizations, including those in the arts, to evaluate programs, assess organizational strength, conduct strategic planning, and increase fundraising. Cheryl Ikemiya is senior program officer for the arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. She works together with the Arts Program staff to plan, implement, review and evaluate its strategy and programs. As the former co-chair of the New York Grantmakers in the Arts, she organized programs for more than 60 arts grant-making institutions in New York City to discuss issues related to grant making and to the visual, performing, literary and media arts fields. She served on the initial Task Force for the New York State Cultural Data Project.
Prior to joining the foundation, Ikemiya was the assistant director of the Performing Arts Program at the Japan Society, Inc., a national nonprofit, cultural and educational institution in New York City. She produced and managed traditional and contemporary Japanese performing arts, artists’ residencies, commissioning projects, national tours and arts-in-education programs.
Ikemiya received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College and Master of Arts in Asian art history from the University of Hawaii as an East-West Center grantee. She serves on the board and is an ordained Buddhist priest and assistant minister at the New York Buddhist Church. She has volunteered at Beth Israel Hospital in its pastoral care program.

PROFILE: Emiko Ono is a program director at the Hewlett Foundation. Her foundation bio shares: 

Emiko Ono is the Program Director of Performing Arts at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Previously, she served as a Program Officer in the Performing Arts Program for six years. She holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and Bank Street College of Education in New York City. Emiko currently serves on the advisory council for Talent Philanthropy Project, which works to ensure funders invest in a well-supported, diverse, and sustainable nonprofit workforce.

Susan Feder, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

What stands out about Susan Feder is not her life-long devotion to music history, criticism, and publishing. It’s not even her unbridled love of music. Above all, Feder is a champion of musicians. You can find her enthusiasm splashed all over the liner notes of notable composers like Phillip Glass and Joan Tower. Notably, she served as editorial coordinator of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians—the musicologist’s 20-volume bible. Before becoming Program Office for the Performing Arts at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2007, she spent twenty years nurturing the careers of composers at G. Schirmer, Inc. It took a seat at Mellon to lure her away from the excitement of working directly with artists and “hearing their music created and sustained by the world’s finest performers.” Today, she continues to gush over (and skyrocket the careers of) emerging composers like Gabriela Lena Frank, whose music she called “extraordinarily life affirming.”
