NET WORTH: $3.6 billion
SOURCE OF WEALTH: Saban Capital Group, Chairman & CEO
JEWISH FUNDING AREAS: Israel Defense & Advocacy, Policy, Education
OVERVIEW: At home, Saban and his wife Cheryl have focused on supporting Jewish causes in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. They've also been strong supporters of Israel, mainly related to defense and advocacy.
BACKGROUND: A native of Egypt, Haim Saban immigrated to Israel where he attended agricultural school and served in the Israeli Defense Force. In 1988, he formed Saban Entertainment, an international television, production, distribution and merchandising company. His Saban Brands owns and manages the Power Rangers brand.
FUNDING PROFILE: Last decade, Haim Saban and his wife Cheryl via their foundation gave a $14 million grant to complete the children's hospital at Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, Israel. The Sabans have also been major bankrollers of Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF). This makes sense, given that Saban served in the Israeli Defense Force. Saban and Cheryl via their family foundation have given FIDF millions. Other Israel-related outfits the couple funds include American Israel Education Foundation, which "educates opinion leaders about the U.S.-Israel relationship," and Israel Emergency Alliance, which uses "arts as a means to peace and countering the cultural boycott of Israel."
Saban has also been heavily involved with the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. Saban sits on Brookings' board of trustees; the outfit's Center for Middle Eastern Policy is home to the Saban Forum, an "annual dialogue between American and Israeli leaders from across the political and social spectrum." The Center for Middle Eastern Policy once bore Saban's name, as well.
The couple is also interested in Jewish education. They've supported outfits like the Sephardic Educational Center (SEC), which is "dedicated to strengthening Jewish identity for youth and young adults", and USC Shoah Foundation, which provides audio-visual interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides.
Other grantees include Jewish Community Foundation, Temple of the Arts, and American Society for Yad Vasbem, which documents the history of the Jewish people during the Holocaust period.
LOOKING FORWARD: Expect this billionaire couple to stay commited to Jewish causes in the coming years. For a look at this funder's overall philanthropy, read our Glitzy Giving Profile of Haim Saban.
