OVERVIEW: Paulson launched his family foundation in 2008, and its asset base has grown to more than $754 million in a recent tax year, and has given away nearly $60 million. The billionaire's philanthropy is still emerging, and includes a number of different interests, but supporting Jewish causes is one.

BACKGROUND: John Paulson grew up in New York and graduated from NYU with a degree in finance. He later attended Harvard Business School. He started his career as a consultant at Boston Consulting Group, and later took a position at Bear Stearns before starting his own firm, Paulson & Co.

FUNDING PROFILE: John Paulson's charitable vehicle supports Jewish outfits. Most of this philanthropy is focused on Jewish causes in the United States, though he has supported the Birthright Israel Foundation, which helps Jewish youth travel to Israel. Paulson funds Jewish religious institutions like Chabad House on Wheels in Miami Beach, Temple Emanu-El of Beverly Hills, Congregation Emanu-El in New York, and Temple Ahavat Achim in Massachussets. 

Paulson strongly funds UJA Federation of New York and also supports American Jewish Committee. A component of Paulson's philanthropy involves the Jewish elderly. He's strongly supported Hebrew Home at Riverdale Foundation and also supports Jewish Association for Services for the Aged.

Grantees have also included Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education, whose goal is to "enhance and enrich the quality of Jewish education throughout the United States;" the Simon Wiesenthal Center; and World Jewish Congress, an "international organization that represents Jewish communities and organizations in 100 countries around the world."
