NET WORTH: Unknown
SOURCE OF WEALTH: York Capital Management
JEWISH FUNDING AREAS: Education, Youth, Israel, Health & Human Services
OVERVIEW: Daniel Schwartz and his wife Deborah give though the DDS Foundation (formerly known as the Deborah and Daniel Schwartz Foundation). Through their foundation, the couple give primarily to Jewish causes in the U.S. (mainly in New York) and Israel. Schwartz strongly supports his alma mater Yeshiva University, where he's a trustee. The foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals.
BACKGROUND: Daniel Schwartz holds a B.A. from Yeshiva University, and an M.S. in industrial engineering from Columbia University. He worked for Morgan Stanley. In the early 1990s, he joined York Capital Management, where he currently serves as Chief Investment Officer.
FUNDING PROFILE: For the past several years, the DDS Foundation has distributed more than $2 million annually. Jewish education appears to be a top priority. Schwartz strongly supports Yeshiva University, his alma mater. Other education-related grantees include the Ramaz School and SAR Academy (both in New York City) and SINAI Schools (Paramus, NJ).
Also in the U.S., Daniel Schwartz has supported social service and medical/health related organizations, including Upper East Side Hatzolah (which provides emergency medical service and emergency ambulance transport for residents of Manhattan’s Upper West Side) and Halachic Organ Donor Society (which aims to increase organ donations from Jews to the general population).
Other support goes to broader Jewish cultural work, including the Jewish Center of Atlantic Beach, as well as Manhattan Jewish Experience, which works with Jewish young professionals. Significant funds also go to major national organizations, such as the UJA Federation.
Daniel Schwartz and his family also support organizations working in (and oftentimes located in) Israel. Many of these supported groups have education and medical focuses like their U.S.-supported counterparts. For example, the DDS Foundation has funded the Etzion Foundation, which supports educational institutions in Israel and United Hatzalah of Israel, which self-describes as the "largest independent, non-profit, fully volunteer Emergency Medical Services organization."
More directly related to Israel advocacy causes, the DDS Foundation has supported the Central Fund for Israel, a "nonprofit association which funds projects in Israel, settlement projects in the West Bank," and the Ir David Foundation, which is dedicated to the "preservation and development of the Biblical City of David and its environs."
LOOKING FORWARD: Daniel Schwartz is still very much engaged in business, but should be watched for continued giving in this arena, since as of now it is his and his foundation's clear philanthropic focus.
