OVERVIEW: Mendel Gold gives through the Gold Family Foundation, an under-the-radar vehicle which does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals. The foundation was formed to support social, religious, and educational organizations, with particular focus on the Jewish community. Gold's philanthropy concentrates on the Northeast.

BACKGROUND: Mendel Gold is a controversial real estate businessman associated with such companies as Ridge Realty Holding Corp. 


RELIGIOUS:  Gold, via his foundation, has given especially strong support to Congregation Ahavas Tzedakah V'Chesed in Brooklyn, New York. Other grantees have included Aish International, a Jewish outreach organization started in 1974 in Jerusalem by Rabbi Noah Weinberg; Chasdei Moshe; and Ohr Vadaath.

EDUCATION: Gold has supported groups like Maryland Hillel, Yeshiva Gedolah of Bridgeport, and Menucha Chesed Services (which works in special education).

HUMAN SERVICES: Gold also supports outfits that work in health and human services. Grantees have included Friends of United Hatzalah of Israel, as well as Tomche Shabbos (Tomchei Shabbos) Of Rockland County, which helps feed poor and low income families in the greater Monsey, NY, area. Another important grantee here is Maharitz Dushinsky. 

ISRAEL STATEHOOD: Gold supports the Central Fund of Israel and Connections Israel (which supports the IDF).

LOOKING FORWARD: Gold keeps a low profile, but his giving is focused on traditional socio-religious Jewish organizaitons. Annual grantmaking is trending toward nearly $2 million annually, with the Gold Foundation funding a similar batch of grantees in the local Jewish community.
