OVERVIEW: Michael Leffell and his wife give through their Lisa & Michael Leffell Foundation, which is focused on Jewish education, religious life, and strengthening security and vibrancy of the State of Israel.

BACKGROUND: Michael Leffell graduated with a B.A. from Clark University in 1981 and received a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1984. Leffell was a litigation associate at the New York law firm Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler. He went on to Davidson Kempner Capital Management, where he was deputy executive managing member. Leffell founded Portage Advisors in 2010.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION, COMMUNITY, and RELIGIOUS LIFE: From the most recent tax return information provided in 2014, Leffell and his wife Lisa, via their foundation, have supported Solomon Schechter School of Westchester (Leffell is President Emeritus of the Board of Trustees), UJA Federation of New York, Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah, and Hillels of Westchester.

ISRAEL: Grantees include American Israel Education Foundation, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, and American Friends of the Reut Institute. The Reut Institute describes itself as creating and scaling “effective models to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing Israel and the Jewish People, while making a significant and distinct contribution to humanity.”

In 2017, their foundation also sponsored the Leffell Seminar on The Impact of Israel upon American Jewry with the Center for Israel Education.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple’s support of the Jewish education, community and the state of Israel to continue, though it may remain difficult to get specifics regarding where they spread their support.
