OVERVIEW: Michael Leffell and his wife Lisa move their philanthropy through the Lisa and Michael Leffell Foundation, which is dedicated to Jewish education and strengthening security and vibrancy of the State of Israel.

BACKGROUND: Michael Leffell graduated with a B.A. from Clark University in 1981 and received a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1984. Leffell was a litigation associate at the New York law firm Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler. He went on to Davidson Kempner Capital Management, where he was deputy executive managing member. Leffell founded Portage Advisors in 2010. 

ISSUES:  

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY: Leffell and Lisa, via their foundation, have supported Solomon Schechter School of Westchester (Leffell is a trustee), UJA Federation of New York, Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah, and Hillels of Westchester.

ISRAEL: Grantees include American Israel Education Foundation, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, and American Friends of the Reut Institute. The Reut Institute describes itself as creating and scaling “effective models to tackle some of the toughest challenges facing Israel and the Jewish People, while making a significant and distinct contribution to humanity.”
