In a somewhat unlikely pairing, the banking world and the sports industry are coming together to help raise funds for local schools. Of course, it doesn't really matter how this combination of forces came about — LA's schools need every cent they can get. (See Grants for K-12 Education).
Wells Fargo & Company is teaming up with FOX Sports West, Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, and the Los Angeles Kings to help raise awareness about the need for technology in local classrooms. For every goal the Kings score in the 2013 season, $1,000 will be donated to the Partnership's 22 schools. This will end up impacting over 16,000 students by providing more digital learning experiences and supporting the use of online learning programs.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said, "Thanks to Wells Fargo and FOX Sports West, the excitement of Kings Hockey has been merged with improving education for some of Los Angeles' neediest students. This blend of philanthropy and sports will ultimately bring new technologies and online learning to the students at the Partnership for LA Schools. This is an exciting moment for LA's kids and sports fans alike."
The funds raised will help implement technological programs to help teachers better manage classrooms in which many children are at varied levels of learning. The Partnership hopes to improve student ability in math, English, and the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
Wells Fargo's Community Banking Regional President echoed these goals by saying, "As the United States continues to compete in a global, 21st century economy, we have to make sure our kids have access to the tools necessary to compete. As Los Angeles' top corporate philanthropist, we support education through both philanthropic giving and team member volunteerism, and this partnership is a great way to help build awareness for a worthy cause."
Both companies do have the opportunity to reach a wide audience. Wells Fargo has more than 265,000 employees, and they serve around one in three households in the US. FOX Sports West produces over 800 live sporting events and airs more than 2,500 hours of programming every year.
Now citizens of LA can cheer on the Kings not just for making goals and playing well on the ice, but also for working to change the face of education.
