PROFILE: Roy A. Hunt and his wife Rachel McMasters Miller Hunt established the Hunt Foundation in 1951; however, when Mr. Hunt passed in 1966, his will created the Roy A. Hunt Foundation. In 1994, the two formerly separate entities merged into one organization, remaining committed to “[t]o support organizations that strive to improve the quality of life.” The foundation’s grantmaking programs are Community Development, the Environment, and Youth Violence Prevention.
Hunt’s Environment Initiative aims to “[p]romote strategic activities that create incentives for environmentally responsible decisions in the private sector.” It’s grants related to marine conservation supports organizations combating the disposal of consumer and industrial toxins and waste and those that are protecting and restoring the quality of fresh water, coastal water, and “[n]earby oceanic areas of the United States.” The foundation does not award grants for local watersheds, conservancies, and land trust; funding for influencing policymaking; and capital projects and easements.

The Roy A. Hunt Foundation has two specific grant categories to which grantseekers may apply. It’s General Grants program are by invitation while its Initiative grants program—which cover its Community Development, Environment, and Youth Violence Prevention programs—accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry throughout the year. Staff and trustees review submissions twice per year, generally from May 15 to June 30 and again from November 1 to January 8.
