IP TAKE: Pretty much any good nonprofit idea in the islands is fair game here. This is also one of the rare foundations that want to meet with you before you submit anything in writing.

PROFILE: The Community Foundation of San Juan Island is based in Friday Harbor, Washington, and serves the San Juan Island community. The foundation was established in 1994 by island residents who wanted to improve the quality of life through the work of local nonprofits. As a community funder, this organization supports local nonprofits in education, arts and culture, human services, health, seniors, youth, and more.

Recent grantees include the Friday Harbor Elementary School PTO (pie booth remodel), Wolf Hollow (harbor seal pup rehabilitation), and Parkinson’s Alert Dogs (training for canine detection of Parkinson’s disease). Support has gone to the Hospice of San Juan, the San Juan Community Theatre, Mullis Senior Center, and Paideia Classical School. A list of grants is here.

It's necessary to call the foundation to schedule a meeting with a foundation representative before submitting a grant application. After that meeting, you can access the grant application on the funder’s website and email it to grants@sijcf.org. You can also drop your application off at their office. All applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis, and deadlines typically fall in March, June, and September.

In a recent year, the foundation had over $7.1 million in total assets. Current financial information can be viewed in the Form 990s, here. Between 2009 and 2013, the foundation committed to raising $10 million to help construct the Peace Island Medical Center. Scholarships are offered through the foundation for higher education and career training opportunities.

The small staff consists of executive director Carrie Unpingco and bookkeeper Cheryl Gardiner. There are 11 members on the board of directors.
