OVERVIEW: The Gannett Foundation offers public health grants that serve the needs of local communities.

PROFILE: The Gannett Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the media and marketing company, Gannett. The foundation seeks to “support nonprofit activities in the communities in which Gannett does business.” Gannett also invests in the “future of the media industry, encourages employee giving, reacts to natural and other disasters, and contributes to a variety of charitable causes.” The foundation makes grants in six areas.
The Community Action, GannettMatch, and VolunteerMatch will particularly interest grantseekers working in public health.
Community Action grants support organizations in which Gannett has an employee and/or operational presence. According to the foundation’s website, it values “projects that take a creative approach to fundamental issues.” In the public health space, the foundation focuses its giving on helping underserved, disadvantaged, and marginalized populations. This often means supporting local food banks, shelters, and healthcare facilities.
Grants generally range between $1,000 and $5,000. The foundation also awards public health-related grants through its GannettMatch and Volunteer Match programs. These grants are comparatively smaller, and often range from $100 to $1,000. However, the foundation will match up to $10,000 for both programs.
Organizations that are geographically eligible may complete an unsolicited grant application and send it in to their local Gannett publisher. Deadlines for submissions fall on February 28 and August 29 of each year. Arts organizations located in the Washington, DC Metro are not eligible Community Action grants.
