OVERVIEW: The Grove Foundation focuses on access to social services, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. The foundation also occasionally also backs anti-domestic violence organizations and those working with the homeless.
IP TAKE: This isn’t one of the most accessible rights funders around, but in the public health space, it shows a good deal of support for smaller and community-based organizations. Still, would-be grantees may still find it difficult to obtain funding here.
PROFILE: The Grove Foundation was established by Andrew Grove, well-known for being the third employee at computer chip giant Intel. Grove served in various capacities at Intel before stepping down as chairman in 2004.
The Grove Foundation, which holds significant assets, has kept an incredibly low public profile ever since it was founded in 1986. The foundation does not have a website, but it does have a formal staff, which provides some help for grantseekers.
In the U.S., Grove's funding interests tend to revolve around education, health, and human services, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area. However, the foundation doesn’t necessarily impose geographic restrictions in its grantmaking as it has made plenty of awards to groups working outside the Bay Area.
In the public health space, Grove tends to support access to social services, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. On a smaller scale, the foundation also backs anti-domestic violence outfits.
The main beneficiaries of Grove’s public health funding are underserved and marginalized populations.
Grant amounts range wildly, starting at a low of $1,000 and moving up from there to over $5 million. Most grants, however, fall in the $10,000 to $100,000 range and it isn’t that unusual for the foundation to award the same organization multiple grants in a single year.
The Grove Foundation does not accept unsolicited requests for funding or grant applications.
