PROFILE: The New York State Health Foundation is committed to the public health and wellness of the people of New York. Although the foundation has only been around since 2002, its overall grantmaking has increased over the past few years. NYSHealth awards public health-related grants through its Building Healthy Communities and Empowering Health Care Consumers programs.

The Building Healthy Communities program supports organizations working to encourage healthy diets and increased physical activity. This program also awards grants to groups boosting access to healthy foods and increasing opportunities for physical activity, operating at both the neighborhood and policy levels.

The foundation’s Empowering Health Care Consumers program increases access to affordable, quality healthcare and encourages patients to take an active role in their own care.

NYSHealth also awards grants out of its Special Projects Fund for projects that target healthcare and public concerns beyond its stated priority areas. The foundation also funds programs helping military vets navigate its Veteran’s Health program.

The majority of the foundation’s grants fall in the $75,000 to $300,000 range. Very few grants exceed $300,000, with a handful in the $10,000 to $50,000 range.
