The Centering Healthcare Institute in Boston aims to shift the way pregnant women, including pregnant teens, receive prenatal services -- through a form of care called "centering." The premise: Comprehensive wellness care for small groups of pregnant women of similar gestation during the final six months of pregnancy and a period of time afterwards.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, based in Battle Creek, Michigan, believes that people shouldn't be left out in the cold when it comes to fresh produce, and has granted $5 million to Will Allen's Growing Power Inc. Based in Milwaukee with ongoing projects in Chicago, Growing Power isn't just about ecological sustainability — it's about creating healthy, food-secure communities one neighborhood at a time.
As far as food goes, cereal is pretty fast. You just dump a few Fruit Loops in a bowl, add milk or some variation of it (because cow's milk is for cows) and spoon away. And even though the Kellogg's is the veritable king of cereal, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation also likes its slow food — as in the opposite of fast food. In fact, slow food is a movement, and even though the W.K. Kellogg Foundation is around 80 years old, it stays pretty hip on its current issues.
