Alan and Daveen Fox

NET WORTH: Unknown

SOURCE OF WEALTH: ACF Property Management

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Youth Philanthropy

OVERVIEW: Alan Fox and his wife, Daveen, move some of their philanthropy through the Frieda C. Fox Family Foundation, which provides modest grants, consulting and project-based technical assistance for youth and education focused initiatives. In 2015, Fox donated $20 million to the University of Arizona School of Music in honor of his father, a famous French horn player. Giving has decreased in recent years.

BACKGROUND: Alan C. Fox graduated from the University of Southern California. Fox worked as a tax supervisor and established his own law firm before founding ACF Property Management, a commercial real estate company currently based in Studio City, California. Fox has also written several books and is the founder of Rattle Poetry Journal in Los Angeles.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: A $20 million gift went to University of Arizona School of Music, renaming it the Fox School of Music. Fox's father, centenarian Fred Fox is a legendary French horn player who's been involved in all things brass for most of his life. Fred performed at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others, taught at USC and other schools, and authored a definitive book on brass playing.

Alan and Daveen established the Frieda C. Fox Family Foundation in the name of Fox's mother, who was also a musician, artist and teacher, and the first in her family to go to college. Frieda C. Fox Family Foundation’s mission is to "maximize the potential of children and youth in our communities." The foundation supports education and arts outfits in Los Angeles and aims to engage youth in philanthropy. In 2013, the foundation suspended all unsolicited proposals to focus on youth philanthropy. One current initiative is Youth Philanthropy Connect, through which the foundation "connects youth boards with their peers and colleagues, and provides educational programs and peer networks that advance youth involvement in philanthropy and develop the personal and professional skills" of the next generation of philanthropic leaders.

Their second major initiative is Education By Nature, a collaborative helmed by the Children's Nature Institute in Los Angeles. The mission of the Children's Nature Institute is to "educate children, families and communities through interactive experiences with nature and to inspire respect, responsibility and a connection to the natural environment."

Money has gone to other Los Angeles area outfits, including Youth Mentoring Action Network, Saving Innocence, and Bright Prospect, where Fox sits on the board.

OTHER: Fox made a surprise $200,000 donation to the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, announced on-air during a 2015 appearance on The Steve Harvey Show

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Fox family to remain focused on youth philanthropy and the Greater Los Angeles community. The family's passion for music will likely show up in their giving.
