Carlos and Marguerite Mason Trust

OVERVIEW: The Carlos and Marguerite Mason Trust supports improvements to the organ transplantation process for needy residents of Georgia.

IP TAKE: This funder offers large grants at the local level.

PROFILE: Established in 1991, the Carlos and Marguerite Mason Trust is the legacy of Marguerite Fugazzi Mason, who left the bulk of her estate to the trust upon her death. She created the foundation in memory of her husband, Carlos, in order to “improve the process of organ transplantation for Georgians through grants to 501(c)(3) organizations, first and primarily to enable them to provide needy persons who are residents of the state of Georgia with financial assistance when they require transplants of eyes, kidneys, hearts and other human organs.” The trust is administered by Wells Fargo.

This trust awards grants to Georgia-based organizations that provide assistance to residents who need organ transplants. It is particularly interested in the transplants of eyes, hearts and kidneys. The Mason Trust provides funding for capital improvements, including buildings and equipment. It also is open to supporting new projects through startup grants in order to address patient financial challenges associated with organ transplantation. The trust considers challenge and matching grants, as well.

Mason Trust grants vary widely in size and often range from $10,000 to $600,000. It also makes grants in the millions of dollars for transplant programs. Review the funder’s recent tax records to learn more about local giving. Grantmaking is restricted to organizations that serve Georgia residents. The funder awards grants up to three years in length.

The trust accepts unsolicited grant requests from nonprofits but does not have a formal application. Proposal details are included on the funder’s website. Postmark or hand-deliver proposals to the office of the trustee in Atlanta by June 1 each year.
