Coca-Cola Foundation: Southeast Grants

OVERVIEW: This Atlanta-based funder prioritizes causes related to women’s empowerment, clean water, and well-being. Coca-Cola funds causes around the world, but has local and regional foundations, too, and a strong presence in the Southeast.

FUNDING AREAS: Women entrepreneurship, safe water, health & well-being, environment, fitness and active lifestyles, community recycling, education

IP TAKE: Much of Coca-Cola’s local support is centered on the Atlanta metro area and Georgia. This is a good funder to know for high-profile local groups working in health and the environment.

PROFILE: The Coca-Cola Foundation has been making grants since 1984 and has awarded more than $820 million to help local communities become more sustainable. Roberto Goizueta, the former chairman and CEO of the Coca-Cola Company, established the foundation, which has grown from a local funder to a global philanthropic organization.

Although the Coca-Cola Foundation is a global organization, the soda brand has 19 local and regional foundations that support community projects, as well. These local and regional foundations exist in Eurasia and Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America and the Pacific.

Specific to the Southeast, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation was established in 1986 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the only local/regional Coca-Cola Foundation in North America. To learn more about scholarship opportunities, contact J. Mark Davis, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation president, at 800-306-2653 and jmdavis@coca-cola.com, or visit the website, www.coca-colascholars.org.

This is also a funder that supports natural disaster emergency relief and matching grants. You can download a list of recent grantees, by geographic region, amount, and description.

Past local support has gone to the following organizations:

  • Atlanta Women’s Foundation

  • The Atlanta Police Foundation

  • Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Inc.

  • Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

  • Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential

  • Georgia-Alabama Land Trust

Interested grant seekers must apply for Coca-Cola grants via the online application system. Grant seekers can find a list of causes not typically supported by the foundation here. It receives thousands of applications each year; in a past year, the foundation awarded over $32 million in total company deductible contributions.

Grant seekers can apply for support at any time of the year and there is no dollar limitation for community support applications. It takes about two months from application submission until the date Coca-Cola issues a response.

This is not a funder that typically welcomes inquiries about submitting applications, but rather directs grant seekers to its online system. General inquiries should be directed to the staff at cocacolacommunityrequest@coca-cola.com.
