PROFILE: Established in 2009, the William E. Dean III Charitable Foundation is a private foundation in Texas. Dr. William Evans Dean (Bill) went to the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Nevada. Dean was a member of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and later had a career as a dentist. During his lifetime, he was also a registered Texas longhorn rancher, a recreational pilot and an animal lover. A post-military passion for Dean was connecting dogs with veterans as they transitioned back to life as civilians. Preventing animal cruelty was also a top interest. Current grantmaking interests for this foundation are animals, education, human services, and religion.

Grants follow the founder’s interest closely and often go to groups that connect animals to veterans in positive ways. Because of his connection to Texas, this foundation is managed by the Bank of America’s Texas office in Dallas. According to Foundation Center data, the Dean organization has given out at least 15 grants totaling $70,000 or more, recently.

Most grants awarded by the William E. Dean III Charitable Foundation are between $5,000 and $10,000 each. View the grant history page linked on the funder’s website to learn more about past grantees. Texas groups have seen the largest share of this foundation’s support. Although Texas is a priority, grants are also awarded nationwide.

The foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. Grant applications are due on July 1 each year, and the application process is all online. Grantees must wait one year before applying for a subsequent grant. Awards are announced three or four months after the application deadline.
