Chris Malachowsky is a cofounder of the computer graphics technology powerhouse NVIDIA, which has grown from a startup to a global Fortune 1000 company, and is now responsible for rendering much of what you see on all those screens you look at every few minutes. NVIDIA, among other things, manufactures the graphics processing units (GPUs) used in everything from mobile phones to video game consoles. It's unclear how much Malachowsky is worth, but in 1999, he established the Chris and Melody Malachowsky Family Foundation, which has given a few hundred thousand dollars annually of late. Unfortunately for grantseekers, though, the foundation doesn't have much of a web presence or a clear way to get in touch. Here are a few must-knows:
1. The Couple Supports A Number of Environmental & Animal Outfits
Recent grantees include the Nature Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Network, Greenpeace, Rainforest Alliance, Sierra Club and Conservation International. The foundation supports the Humane Society of the United States and Pilots N Paws, an "online volunteer organization where general aviation pilots can connect with rescue volunteers to transport animals in need to safe havens." Malachowsky has been flying since he was a youth.
2. The Foundation Funds Youth Organizations
Recent grantees include Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, which works with underprivileged youth in East Palo Alto and surrounding areas, City Year San Jose, Los Altos Education Foundation, Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation, and Third Street Community Center, which provides "educational programs and enrichment opportunities for children in San Jose."
3. Malachowsky Supports Health and Human Services
The couple supports health outfits such as Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, American Red Cross, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Children's Health Fund, and Angel Flight, which arranges free transportation to medical treatment. Malachowsky has also given to human services outfits such as Abode Services, which provides housing and services for the homeless, United Way Silicon Valley, and Second Harvest Food Bank.
4. Malachowsky Supports Outfits That Work Internationally
The foundation has funded such as Global Impact, which raises funds to meet critical humanitarian needs around the world, the NVIDIA Foundation, which "accelerates solutions to the world's most pressing issues in health and education," and Mercy Corps, an "international development organization that helps people around the world survive and thrive after conflict, crisis and natural disaster."
As is clear from our rundown, Malachowsky and his wife Melody have been pretty varied with their philanthropy, focusing not just on the Bay Area, but far beyond it. But it's unclear if more money will be pumped into these causes down the line. In 2013, just under $300,000 went out the door.
