Aaron and Betty Lee Stern

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Tiger Management

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Arts & Culture

OVERVIEW: Aaron and Betty Stern conduct their philanthropy through the Aaron and Betty Lee Stern Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $231,000 in grants in 2018. The couple largely supports educational and arts institutions.

BACKGROUND: Aaron Stern received a Ph.D. from Columbia University, where he concentrated on the methodology of science and empirical studies of child development. During his academic career, Stern was on the faculties of Yale, Columbia, NYU, UCLA, and Washington State University. He helped develop the Code and Rating System of the Motion Picture Association of America and served as its director. Stern joined Tiger Management in 1993, where he was on the Management Committee and Board of Directors, as COO, and now as a senior advisor.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Sterns have supported Ursinus College, Columbia University, Ethical Culture Fieldston SchoolGlades Academy, and Brunswick School.

ARTS & CULTURE: Stern and Betty are collectors of international ceramic art and design from the 20th and 21st centuries. They have supported institutions such as Whitney Museum, The MetMuseum of Modern Art, Carnegie Hall, and Society of the Four Arts

OTHER: Stern is a trustee of the Robertson Foundation and a member of the board of the Robertson Scholarship program. The couple support the Tiger Foundation, a Julian Robertson vehicle that "strives to break the cycle of poverty in New York City." The Sterns direct significant sums to a donor-advised fund at National Philanthropic Trust, and their miscellaneous donations of under $5,000 make it difficult to get a full picture of their giving.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Sterns to stick with their interests for the foreseeable future.
