FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Causes, Health, Environment, Education & Youth

OVERVIEW: Barry Klein and family conduct their philanthropy through the Ner Tzion Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, dispersed just over $1 million grants in 2017. The Klein family's giving strongly prioritizes Jewish causes. Other interests include health and other organizations in Montana and the Northwest.

BACKGROUND: Barry L. Klein graduated from New York University with a B.S. and B.A. in 1973 and an M.B.A. in 1974. He was at J. Aron and Company, eventually becoming vice president of trading. Klein founded Drexel Burnham Lambert Trading Corporation where he held various executive positions including president and CEO. Klein went on to found DKR Capital with Gary Davis.

ISSUES:

JEWISH CAUSES: The Kleins recently directed a seven-figure sum to Central Fund of Israel, which promotes charitable activities in Israel. The family had previously given significant money to the organization. Other grantees include Jewish Philosophy Fund, American Friends of Nishmat, and American Friends of Alyn Hospital

OTHER: While the bulk of annual grantmaking goes to the Jewish community, Klein has also funded health, environmental, youth, and other organizations, particularly in Montana. Grantees include JDRF Northwest Chapter, Park County Environmental Council, and Shift Empowerment Programs, "a nonprofit located in Livingston, MT, dedicated to empowering youth, families and communities through personal development."

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect Klein to stick with his select interests for now.
