BACKGROUND: A third-generation Montanan, David M. Leuschen received an A.B. from Dartmouth and an MBA from Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck School of Business. Leuschen was a partner and managing director at Goldman Sachs and founder and head of the Goldman Sachs global energy and power group. In 2000, Leuschen left Goldman to form his own energy investment firm, Riverstone Holdings.

ISSUES:

MONTANA & WYOMING COMMUNITY: Leuschen founded the David M. Leuschen Charitable Foundation in 1988. Initially, the foundation was focused on supporting Montana and Wyoming students who wanted to attend Dartmouth and the Tuck School of Business, Leuschen’s alma mater. In the years since, the foundation’s grantmaking has broadened to support education, health, and the environment in Leuschen’s home region. Leuschen also has a ranching operation, Switchback Ranch, near Yellowstone Park.

Leuschen is a director of the Montana Land Reliance, which he supports. Other grantees include Big Timber Montana Fire Department, the U.S. Olympic Team (Leuschen is a trustee of United States Olympic Committee Foundation), the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, and the Montana State University Foundation.

NEW YORK COMMUNITY: Leuschen has ties to the East Coast, particularly New York City. His wife, Alexia, is an interior designer. Leuschen and Alexia, via the Alexia M. Leuschen Charitable Foundation, support New York institutions The Met, Creative Time, the Frick Collection, the Central Park Conservancy, and NYU Langone Medical Center.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect Leuschen's giving to continue to focus on the intermountain west and New York City.
