SOURCE OF WEALTH: Sawaya Partners

FUNDING AREAS: Cancer Treatment

OVERVIEW: Fuad Sawaya co-created the Helen Sawaya Fund, which bears the name of his late wife and aims to enhance the experience of cancer patients through art, music, reflexology, a travel program and more.

BACKGROUND: Fuad Sawaya graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering from American University of Beirut in 1983 and his M.B.A. in finance and accounting at Columbia University Graduate School of Business in 1986. He began his career at PaineWebber, Inc., spending 14 years first in the M&A department and later, heading up the Consumer Products Investment Banking Group. Sawaya led JP Morgan’s Middle Market Consumer Products Group. In 2001, he launched Sawaya Partners, a leader in consumer mergers, acquisitions and financial advisory services.

ISSUES:

CANCER TREATMENT: Sawaya co-founded the Helen Sawaya Fund to honor his late wife Helen Sawaya, an Amherst graduate who passed away from breast cancer in her thirties. She was treated at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, part of the Mount Sinai Hospital system. The fund was established at the hospital whose mission is to enhance the experience of cancer patients through art, music, reflexology, a travel program and more. The fund runs an Artist-in-Residence Program at University Settlement Hospital and Mt. Sinai West Cancer Center. Its Music Therapy program, in conjunction with the Louis Armstrong Music Therapy team, supports the physical and psychosocial needs of cancer patients and families. It also runs a massage therapy program, and a pet therapy program, among other efforts.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect Sawaya to continue to steadily dig into this deeply personal interest area.
