OVERVIEW: James Riley and family move their philanthropy through the Riley Family Foundation. The family’s giving through their foundation has an East Coast focus. Riley’s alma mater, St. John’s University, and his kids' school, Villanova, have been big winners.

BACKGROUND: James P. Riley Jr. graduated from St. John’s University with a bachelor’s degree in 1974 and an MBA in 1975. He joined Goldman Sachs and became a managing director and  partner.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Riley has steadily supported alma mater St. John’s University, and established scholarships for graduates of Sacred Heart Academy, Catholic Big Sisters and Big Brothers, and the Children’s Aid Society. Riley daughter Shannon is a senior social worker with the Children's Aid Society. She’s also executive director of the Riley Family Foundation.

Riley and wife Ellen’s four daughters (and fellow Riley Family Foundation trustees) all graduated from Villanova University, which the family has also strongly supported. The family established the Riley Family Campus Ministry at the Philadelphia-area school.

Riley has also been an adjunct professor at Adelphi University, where his late mother had earned a master’s degree. The university is home to the James Riley, Jr. Trading Room as well as Philanthropic Action for Challenging Times (PACT), an extra-curricular initiative supported by the Riley Family Foundation.

Other grantees have included Harlem RBI, Harlem Children’s Zone, Uncommon Schools, and Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation (Riley is an honorary trustee), “an advocate for Catholic education on Long Island.”

RELIGIOUS: Grantees have included Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Patrick’s Church, and The Augustinian Fund.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: The Riley Family Foundation’s grantmaking also earmarks funds American Cancer Society, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Interfaith Nutrition Network, and St. John's Bread & Life, an antipoverty outfit that works in Brooklyn and Queens.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Riley family’s giving to continue strongly in education and schools close to the family. We’ll also keep an eye on the Riley daughters, who play a leading role in the family’s giving.
