OVERVIEW: Jon Winkelried and his wife Abby move their philanthropy through the Jon & Abby Winkelried Foundation. The couple via their foundation support Jewish causes, education, and more.
BACKGROUND: New Jersey native Jon Winkelried attended the University of Chicago, where he received an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in business administration. He joined Goldman Sachs where he made partner and worked until he retired in 2009 as president and co-COO. Winkelried is the co-CEO and a partner of TPG in San Francisco.
EDUCATION & YOUTH: Winkelried is a vice chairman of the board of trustees of Vanderbilt University, which the couple supports. The Winkelrieds are Vanderbilt parents. Other grantees have included Columbia University, Teach for America, GlassRoots, and The KinderFrogs School, an early childhood education program at TCU.
JEWISH CAUSES: Winkelried’s late father Irwin was a self-made businessman who immigrated to Newark from Poland. The family has supported Jewish outfits Congregation B'nai Jeshurun Fund, American Jewish Committee, UJA Federation of NY, World Council of Synagogues, and Jewish Community Foundation of Central PA.
HEALTH: Grantees have included NYU Langone Medical Center, AMFAR, Hospital for Special Surgery, Willie's Wish Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis, and the Orthopedic Research Center at Colorado State University. It may be worth noting that the couple’s daughter is studying to be a pediatric nurse.
ARTS & CULTURE: Winkelried raises competitive ranch and roping horses at his Colorado ranch and has given particularly large sums to National Cowgirl Museum of Fame via the Winkelried foundation. Other grantees have included Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and Portland Museum.
LOOKING FORWARD: Winkelried is still very much engaged in business but he held a very large stake in Goldman Sachs prior to the firm’s IPO. Greater sums may yet move out of the foundation in coming years.
