OVERVIEW:  Neal Moszkowski, Ramez Sousou, and Towerbrook partners move philanthropy through the Towerbrook Foundation, whose grantmaking includes educational and humanitarian organizations. The foundation was established in 2006 to contribute to the communities in which Towerbrook’s partners live and work. Moszkowski also has a family foundation with his wife, Amanda.

BACKGROUND: Neal Moszkowski has a B.A. from Amherst College and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has been a member of the principal investment area of Goldman Sachs from 1993 to 1998, co-head of Soros Private Equity Partners, and a member of the management committee of Soros Fund Management. Moszkowski went on to cofound Towerbrook Capital Partners.

Ramez Sousou has an A.B. from Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He has been a senior member of the principal investment area of Goldman Sachs in London and New York, co-head of Soros Private Equity, and a member of the Management Committee of Soros Fund Management. Sousou went on to cofound Towerbrook Capital Partners.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The foundation’s grantmaking in this area focuses on City Year, which runs a mentoring program in city schools in the US and the UK, and on Uncommon Schools, where Moszkowski is a trustee. Other grantees include Columbia University, Cornell University, UPenn, Riverdale Country School, Ubuntu Education Fund, and Williams College.

HUMANITARIAN & GLOBAL: The Towerbrook Foundation supports Habitat for Humanity. Sousou sits on the board of Habitat for Humanity International, as well as the U.S. Middle East Project and Brookings Foreign Policy Leadership Council.

HEALTH: Grantees include Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Voices Against Brain Cancer, Pregnancy Centers of Central Virginia, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, and Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

ARTS & CULTURE: Moszkowski sits on the board of New York Historical Society, which the Towerbrook Foundation supports. Other grantees include Central Park Conservancy and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

MOSZKOWSKI FAMILY FOUNDATION: Moszkowski also moves philanthropy through the Moszkowski Family Foundation, a recently minted vehicle he runs with his wife, Amanda. Grantees include NY Historical Society, Columbia Prep, USC (Moszkowski is a member of the President’s Leadership Council) and McDonogh School (Moszkowski is on the board of visitors).

LOOKING FORWARD: The co-CEOs of Towerbrook are steady givers through Towerbrook. Moszkowski recently started a family foundation, as well. Perhaps Sousou will follow suit and both will give on a greater level down the line.
