OVERVIEW: Paul Shiverick and his wife Betsy move their philanthropy through the Shelter Hill Foundation. The couple is strongly focused on education; Shiverick is on the board o American Federation of Children (AFC). Another interest is cancer research.

BACKGROUND:  Paul Shiverick graduated from Northwestern University and received an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth. He worked at the Bank of New York and Atwood Oceanics before joining the investment industry. Shiverick cofounded Seminole Capital.


EDUCATION & YOUTH: Paul Shiverick joined the board of American Federation of Children, a Betsy DeVos-chaired organization. As he puts it, “The greatest catalyst of success in this country is a quality education and we should stop at nothing to help parents, especially from low-income families, give their children an opportunity to realize the American dream by sending them to a school that best fits their needs.” Grantmaking out of the couple’s Shelter Hill Foundation heavily features schools and education advocacy organizations.  Grantees have included Teach for America,  St. Pius X Catholic High School, Charleston School for Math and Science, Orange Grove Elementary Charter School, Catholic Partnership Schools, Alliance for School Choice, and the Hawken School, where he sits on the board.

The couple also supports Shiverick’s alma mater Dartmouth. Other grantees have included MIT School of Engineering, Lake Forest College, and Mount Holyoke, from where Betsy Shiverick graduated.

HEALTH: Shiverick is co-chair of Cancer Research Institute, which the family steadily supports through their foundation. Shiverick’s grandfather was chairman of Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases (now Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) for two decades. Other grantees have included Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation and National MS Society.

OTHER: Apart from these grantmaking areas, the couple has also supported arts institutions like Met Opera and Henry Morrison Flagler Museum.
