Peter and Stephanie Nolan

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Nolan Capital, Leonard Green and Partners

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Social Services, Medical Research

OVERVIEW: Peter and Stephane Nolan conduct their philanthropy through the Stephanie and Peter Nolan Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $600,000 in grants in 2017. The couple strongly supports their mutual alma mater Cornell University, where several other Nolans graduated as well. Other giving takes place in Southern California, and in Catholic education, and medical research.

BACKGROUND: Peter J. Nolan earned a B.S. in agricultural economics and finance, as well as an MBA, from Cornell University. Nolan was a first vice president in corporate finance at Drexel, Burnham, Lambert in Beverly Hills and was a managing director and Co-Head of DLJ's (now Credit Suisse) Los Angeles Investment Banking Division, which he joined in 1990. Nolan joined Leonard Green & Partners as managing partner in 1997. He founded Nolan Capital in 2014.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Nolan sits on the board of trustees of his alma mater Cornell University, where Stephanie also graduated. Nolan's father, David, also graduated from the school, as did his siblings. The couple steadily supports their school, home to the David J. Nolan Directorship of the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. The couple also established the Peter and Stephanie Nolan Veterans Professional Scholarship Fund, with $8 million, and gave $50 million to establish the Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration.

Much of the Nolans' other giving takes place in Southern California. They have supported The UCLA Foundation, Loyola High School, Marymount High School, and Catholic Education Foundation. The couple seems particularly interested in Catholic education. They have also supported CASA Foundation and Children’s Bureau, which deal with child abuse.

SOCIAL SERVICES: Grantees include Catholic Charities of Los Angeles and Friends of St. Lawrence Watts Youth Center.

MEDICAL RESEARCH: The Nolans have supported St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Lupus LA, and Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Resarch.

OTHER: The couple supports American Enterprise Institute, and has directed funds to religious organizations, including Crossroads Christian Fellowship.

LOOKING FORWARD: The Nolan Foundation appears to be recently minted, so giving could change and deepen in the coming years. Expect a strong interest in Cornell and Catholic education to hold, however.
