NET WORTH: Unknown
SOURCE OF WEALTH: P.A.W. Capital Partners
FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth (STEM Education)
OVERVIEW: Peter Wright moves his philanthropy through the Wright Foundation, which gave away around $1 million in a recent year. Wright is strongly interested in STEM education, and also supports schools with which he has a personal connection. Giving through his foundation has lately focused on a handful of organizations.
BACKGROUND: Born in New York City, Peter A. Wright graduated with a B.S. in engineering from Cornell University and an MBA in finance from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management. Wright began his career as a financial analyst at I.B.M Corporation, where he was involved in the development and control of operating plans. From 1986 through 1990, Wright was President and CEO of SoundView Financial Group, Inc., a broker/dealer in Stamford, Connecticut. He established P.A.W. Partners in 1990.
EDUCATION & YOUTH: Wright invests in STEM education; he says long-term growth opportunities for the U.S. depends on increasing the number of college graduates in STEM fields. As he puts it, “If you look at all of the job creation in Silicon Valley, these are typically all STEM students.” Wright says he prefers "to fund endowments. By starting endowments, you help an organization in perpetuity." He serves on the board of OFANIM, an Israeli nonprofit that provides STEM enhancement/enrichment education for economically disadvantaged students in Israel. The Wright family supports OFANIM via their foundation; other grantees include Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, The Winchendon School (towards a STEM endowment), Madison Square Boys & Girls Club, and Connecticut Science Olympiad. He has also supported his alma mater Cornell and directed funds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (toward a postdoc program).
OTHER: Wright has made one-off gifts to Joyful Heart Foundation, Florida Studio Theatre and West Coast Black Theater Troupe. He has supported Birthright Israel Foundation.
LOOKING FORWARD: Expect Wright to remain laser-focused on STEM education through his foundation.
