FUNDING AREAS: Interfaith Relations and Religious Tolerance
OVERVIEW: S A and Nina Ibrahim .started the Nina and S.A. Ibrahim Foundation to promote interfaith relations and religious tolerance through student travel and exchange. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded just over $1.6 million in grants in 2018; however, tax filings also indicate that its 2018 filings were the foundation’s last.
BACKGROUND: S A Ibrahim graduated from Osmania University in India with a mechanical engineering degree and from the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania with his MBA. He held a range of marketing, sales, financial, risk-management and senior executive positions at major institutions such as General Electric, JP Morgan-Chase and American Express. Ibrahim was most recently the CEO of Radian Group, a credit enhancement company. He currently works as an advisor and angel investor focused on socially-responsible technology startups.
ISSUES:
INTERFAITH RELATIONS & RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE: Ibrahim was the first Muslim to serve on any board of the Anti-Defamation League. Along with the Department of State and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, he funded a trip to Dachau and Auschwitz for a group of Muslim leaders from around the world. And with his son, Winston, he created the Ibrahim Leadership and Dialogue Project in the Middle East, which provides opportunities for high-achieving U.S. undergraduate students of diverse faiths to develop their leadership skills and gain first-hand experience with dialogue efforts in the Middle East. The program partners with Queens College and previously partnered with the Institute of International Education.
The foundation has also supported activities with organizations such as the Interfaith Youth Core, the Auburn Theological Seminary, the Anti Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee by lending support to initiatives that advance intercultural and interfaith acceptance. Recently, the foundation has been a founding supporter of the Penn Wharton Public Policy Center that seeks to partner with the Administration and Congress in providing non-partisan research to facilitate sound public policy decisions. UPenn is also home to the S A Ibrahim Endowed Fellowship, enabling young women from South Asia to pursue a Wharton MBA degree, and the Ibrahim Theater at the International House of Philadelphia.
