OVERVIEW: Eff and Patty Martin and family conduct their philanthropy through the Martin Family Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $500,000 in grants in 2018. The Martins have several interests, including education, spirituality and music.

BACKGROUND: Eff W. Martin received a BA and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from Rice University and obtained an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1973. Martin has spent more than three decades in the investment banking industry. At Goldman Sachs, he was one of the founders of the firm’s high technology business and became a partner in 1988. In 2007, he founded Anthos Capital, He went on to become a founding partner of Anthos Capital, which invests in technology and media companies.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION: The Martins’ education funding has been directed mainly toward higher education. Their daughter attended the College of William and Mary, in Virginia, and the Martins bankrolled Martin Family Stadium, a soccer and lacrosse facility, at the college. The Martins have also supported a spiritual life initiative at Pepperdine, a Christian University in Malibu, California, with a donation of $1 million. Another grantee, Westmont College, in Santa Barbara, California, used funding to establish the Martin Institute for Christianity and Culture at the Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation. Additional recipients include the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, the Duke University Divinity School and the Redwood City Unified School District. Eff Martin also sits on the board of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy.

RELIGIOUS: The Martins are deeply engaged in several areas of Christian spiritual formation ministries. They have supported the Menlo Church, a Presbyterian congregation where Eff Martin serves as an elder, and WellSpring, a Menlo Park organization that “offers resources for enlivening and sustaining a life-giving and transformative relationship with Jesus.” The couple has also invested in Renovare, a “Christian nonprofit that models, resources, and advocates fullnetss of life with God.”

ARTS & CULTURE: Eff Martin serves as a life governor on the board of the San Francisco Symphony. The Martin Family Foundation has also supported the Bitterroot Performing Arts Council, a community performing arts organization in Hamilton, Montana.

OTHER: The Martins have also supported select environmental, sports, and medical and human rights organizations, including the International Justice Mission.
