OVERVIEW: Eugene and Marilyn (Mindy) Stein conduct their philanthropy through the Eugene and Marilyn Stein Family Foundation, which available tax filings show, gave away around $2.32 million in 2017. In 2001, the couple founded Tikun Olam Foundation, a support organization of the Jewish Community Foundation which promotes early childhood mental health and the prevention of child neglect. Tax filings show that Tikun awarded just under $62,000 in grants in 2018. The Steins' giving also touches the arts, education, and more, primarily in the Los Angeles area. 

BACKGROUND: Eugene Stein graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering from UCLA and an MBA from Harvard University. He is the former vice chairman and director of Capital Strategy Research, a unit of the Capital Group Companies, a global investment management company. 

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: The Steins have supported A Noise Within, a performing arts theater in Pasadena, as well as Descanso Gardens, LACMA, Los Angeles Opera (Stein is a director), Pasadena Conservancy of Music, and Natural History Museum.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Stein once chaired the board of Pitzer College in Claremont, California, and the couple have steadily supported the liberal arts college. He is on the board of Zero to Three, a "nonprofit that informs, trains and supports professionals, policymakers and parents in their efforts to improve the lives of infants."

Other grantees include Alliance College Ready Public Schools. Princeton University, UCLA Foundation, Stanford University, Swarthmore, Harvard Business School, Flintridge Preparatory School, and La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation. The couple's kids attended La Cañada Flintridge public schools and Flintridge Prep.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Mindy once served as vice chair of Union Station Foundation, which the family supports. The Steins have supported Huntington HospitalVenice Family Clinic, and Southern Poverty Law Center, among other institutions.

JEWISH CAUSES: In 2001, the couple founded the Tikun Olam Foundation, a support foundation at the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles. Tikun Olam means "healing the world" in Hebrew and the foundation's mission is to help vulnerable children by providing support to both the child and family, with a primary focus on early childhood mental health and prevention of child abuse. Via Tikun Olam Foundation, the Steins gave $1 million to establish the Stein Tikun Olam Infant-Family Mental Health Initiative at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). 

LA COMMUNITY: The Steins have recently directed seven-figure sums annually to California Community Foundation. They have given to Pasadena Community Foundation, Union Station Homeless Services, and Southern California Public Radio.
