OVERVIEW:  Betty and Jean-Marie Eveillard conduct their philanthropy through the Eveillard Family Charitable Trust. According to available tax filings, the foundation gave away a little under $1.3 million in 2018. Giving focuses on the Northeast. One interest is the arts—Betty Eveillard serves on several key boards. 

BACKGROUND: Betty Eveillard grew up in the Boston area. She graduated from Smith College in 1969 and went to Harvard Business School. After graduation, she joined the Lehman Brothers investment banking division, where she rose to the level of Managing Director and Co-Head of the Merchandising Group. In 1988, she joined PaineWebber as a Managing Director. She then joined Bear Stearns, retiring in 2003.

Jean-Marie Eveillard graduated from Écoles des Hautes Études Commerciales. He started his career in 1962 with Société Générale before relocating to the United States in 1968. He later worked as an analyst with the SoGen International Fund. In 1979, he was appointed portfolio manager of the SoGen International Fund, later named the First Eagle Global Fund. He was lead portfolio manager for all of First Eagle Investment Management Global Value investment strategies.

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: Betty Eveillard chairs the board of trustees of the Frick Collection and once chaired Glimmerglass Opera, where she and Jean-Marie are life trustees. Grantees include Glimmerglass Opera, Frick Collection, The Met, Carnegie Hall, American Friends of British Museum, World Monuments Fund, where one of the couple’s daughters worked, The Met Opera (Betty is a managing director), San Francisco Opera, and American Friends of the Louvre.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Betty supports alma maters Smith College (she once chaired the board) and Harvard Business School. Some of the giving at Smith has gone to international programming. Other grantees include Tufts University (the couple are Tufts parents), Weill Cornell Medical College, Prep for Prep, Columbia University, and French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF). 

RELIGIOUS: Grantees include Plymouth Congregational Church, Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, and Holy Protection Greek Orthodox Church.

OTHER: The couple has also supported Otsego Land Trust, Manhattan Institute, and Children of Armenia Fund.           

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple to stick with their longtime interest areas. Betty is involved in the women’s giving space, which may emerge as another interest through the family’s foundation. The couple’s daughter Pauline is based in San Francisco, a potential site of greater giving.
