OVERVIEW: Roy Zuckerberg moves his philanthropy through the Roy J. Zuckerberg Family Foundation, which invests in health, Jewish causes, arts and culture, education, human services and the greater New York City area. BACKGROUND: Roy J. Zuckerberg received graduated from the Lowell Technological Institute in 1958 and served in the U.S. Army. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1967, working in securities sales, and became a partner at the firm in 1976. He retired from Goldman Sachs in 1998. In 2004, he founded Samson Capital Advisors, which was recently acquired by Fiera Capital Corporation.
ISSUES:
HEALTH: Health is Zuckerberg’s greatest philanthropic interest, and he has supported various types of organizations and causes. He is a regular supporter of Northwell Health (formerly North Shore LIJ Health System), and once served as chairman of the organization. Zuckerberg also serves on the board of trustees of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a leading research facility in the areas of cancer, neuroscience, plant biology and quantitative biology. A special interest in the area of health is facial deformity; past grantees include myface and Operation Smile, which provide surgery, counseling and other services to pediatric patients. JEWISH CAUSES: Through his foundation, Zuckerberg has steadily supported many Jewish organizations in the U.S. and Israel. Past grantees include the Jewish Foundation For The Righteous, the American Friends of Libi and the American Friends of the Israel Museum.
ARTS & CULTURE: Zuckerberg’s giving in the area of arts and culture has prioritized organizations operating in New York City. Past grantees include Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Parsons Dance Foundation, the Morgan Library and the American Tap Dance Foundation.
EDUCATION: Zuckerberg serves as a trustee emeritus at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, where he also endowed the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, which “leads interdisciplinary, cutting-edge research and graduate education in water sciences.” Other past grantees include the Caedmon School, the Hotchkiss School, Montclair State University, Oxford University and the University Of Massachusetts.
HUMAN SERVICES: Zuckerberg’s philanthropy in this area has prioritized addiction rehabilitation and the organizations operating in Palm Beach County, Florida. Past grantees include the United Way of Palm Beach, the Hospice of Palm Beach County, Freedom from Addiction and Phoenix House, a drug rehabilitation program operating in ten states.
GREATER NEW YORK COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENT: In the greater New York City area, Zuckerberg has supported New York Public Radio, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, the Nassau Land Trust and the Peconic Land Trust.
