OVERVIEW: Marc Leder moves personal philanthropy through the Marc J. Leder Foundation, recently giving several big gifts to his alma mater, University of Pennsylvania. According to available tax filings, the Leder Foundation distributed $1 million in grants from 2017 to 2018.

The foundation also strongly supports the Sun Capital Partners Foundation, focusing on local nonprofits and educational institutions, while also responding to urgent relief efforts stemming from events such as Hurricane Sandy and the Haiti earthquake. Leder and his business partner Rodger Krouse jointly support Sun Capital Partners Foundation.

BACKGROUND: Marc J. Leder graduated with a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is cofounder and co-CEO of Sun Capital Advisors and has been engaged in leveraged buyouts, investment banking, and business operations for more than three decades.

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: Leder recently made a $1 million gift to endow a curatorial directorship at UPenn’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), a non-collecting institution presenting exhibitions at the forefront of contemporary practice and culture. Leder recently joined the board of ICA. He has served as a director of Berggruen Museum and is on the board of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, which Sun Capital Partners Foundation has supported.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Leder also recently made a $2 million gift to the Behavior Change for Good Initiative, establishing the Marc J. Leder Behavior Change for Good Term Fund at the School of Arts and Sciences and the Wharton School. The Behavior Change for Good Initiative (BCFG) “unites scientists in the social sciences, medicine, computer science, and neuroscience in an extraordinary interdisciplinary effort to change behavior for good."

Via his family foundation, Leder has steadily supported UPenn through the years. Sun Capital Partners Foundation has supported Success Academy Charter Schools, University of Arizona Foundation and John McDonogh High School in Louisiana. 

SOUTH FLORIDA COMMUNITY: Sun Capital Partners Foundation has donated to more than 250 charities since its founding in 2007. Many of these are in the South Florida community, including University Preparatory Academy-Pinellas, Junior Achievement South Florida, YMCA Palm Beach, Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, and Women In Distress, “the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County, Florida."

OTHER: Sun Capital Partners Foundation's grantmaking has touched Massachusetts General Hospital, National Hemophilia Foundation, National Museum of American Jewish History, Robin Hood Foundation, and UJA Federation of New York. 

LOOKING FORWARD: Only in his 50s, Leder recently made a series of large personal gifts, which may suggest his personal philanthropy is ramping up.
