OVERVIEW: George and Martha Kellner and family move their philanthropy through the Kellner Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away around $222,000 in 2017. The Kellners strongly support schools with which they have a personal connection via their foundation.

BACKGROUND:  George A. Kellner graduated with a B.A. from Trinity College, a J.D. from Columbia Law School and an M.B.A. from New York University’s Leonard Stern Graduate School of Business. He began his professional career as a securities lawyer at the Wall Street law firm of Carter, Ledyard and Milburn. He was as a senior vice president and founded the arbitrage department of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Kellner went on to found hedge fund Kellner Capital.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Kellner supports his undergraduate alma mater Trinity College, where he established the George A. Kellner ’64 Scholarship which brings four Hungarian students to Trinity each year to study. They family also launched George A. and Martha B. Kellner South Asian Studies Chair and the George A. Kellner Fund for Presidential Scholars. Kellner also supports New York University’s Leonard Stern Graduate School of Business, home to the George A. Kellner Faculty Fellow. Kellner is a former adjunct assistant professor of finance at NYU. Other grantees have included Columbia Law School, Bard College, and Milton Academy (the couple are parents). The Kellners are also major donors to Children’s Aid Society.
