OVERVIEW: Donald Mullen moves his philanthropy through the Donald R. Mullen Family Foundation, which available tax filings indicate, gave away around $1.2 million in 2018. Mullen’s giving through his foundation primarily focuses on organizations in New York City, involving the arts, health, and education.

BACKGROUND: Donald R. Mullen Jr. graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1981. He was a senior vice president in the high-yield bond department at Drexel Burnham Lambert in Los Angeles and went on to be a Senior Partner and Head of Global Credit and Mortgage Business at Goldman Sachs. In 2001, he went on to cofound Pretium Partners, a leading alternative investment management firm.

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: In 2010, Mullen gave a $1 million gift for High Line Art to produce installation pieces for the elevated railway turned urban park in New York. He continues to support Friends of the High Line, as well as Bay Street Theatre, Big Apple Circus, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, MoMA, and Whitney Museum.

HEALTH: Grantees have included Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America, Prostate Cancer Foundation, Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood, New York Stem Cell Foundation, and Headstrong Project, which deals with mental health.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Mullen supports his alma mater Yale University. Other grantees have included Brooklyn Academy of Music, Harlem RBI, City Year, and Harlem Children’s Zone.

OTHER: Mullen has also supported progressive organizations, including ACLU.

LOOKING FORWARD: Mullen hasn’t said much publicly about his philanthropy as far as we can see, but expect him to stick with established interests, with annual donations hovering in the $1 million to $2 million range.
