OVERVIEW: Maurice and Corinne Greenberg move philanthropy through the Maurice R. And Corinne P. Greenberg Foundation, which according to available tax filings, gave about $500,000 in 2017. Greenberg supports his alma mater as well as other educational, health, and cultural causes. Greenberg is chairman of The Starr Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Maurice R. Greenberg received a pre-law certificate from the University of Miami and an LL.B from New York Law School in 1950. In 1960, he joined C.V. Starr & Co., a worldwide insurance and investment company, as vice president. Two years later Greenberg moved to American International Group (AIG), was named CEO in 1968, and retired in 2005 as chairman and CEO. Under his leadership AIG became the largest insurance company in the world.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION: Greenberg supports his alma mater University of Miami Law School via his foundation. Other grantees have included Rockefeller University (Greenberg is a trustee emeritus), and LaGuardia High School. Via the Starr Foundation, St. John’s University received a $15 million gift to establish the Maurice R. Greenberg Leadership Initiative at the School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (SRM).

MEDICAL RESEARCH, HEALTHCARE & HUMAN NEEDS: Greenberg is a board member and chairman emeritus of New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Foundation. Other grantees have included Children of Armenia Fund and C.V. Starr Disaster Relief Fund.

ARTS & CULTURE: Corinne is chairman of the national board of Young Audiences/Arts for Learning and has served on the board since 1984. The couple support the institution. Corrine, who worked as a computer programmer, has a passion for the arts and studied piano at the Manhattan School of Music. The couple has also supported New York Philharmonic and Jewish organizations World Jewish Congress and Park East Synagogue.

POLICY: Greenberg served in the Army during World War II and is honorary vice chairman and director of the Council on Foreign Relations, which the family supports.
