SOURCE OF WEALTH: YIS Capital, Quellos Group

FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Continuity, Community Needs, Healthcare, Education, Arts

OVERVIEW: Jeff Greenstein and his wife Judy cofounded the Greenstein Family Foundation in 2010 to further their philanthropic objectives. The Seattle-based charitable foundation concentrates on driving meaningful change in the core areas of Jewish continuity, basic community needs, healthcare, education, and the arts.

BACKGROUND: Jeff Greenstein graduated with a BBA from University of Washington in 1984. He began his financial career at Merrill Lynch and later moved to Oppenheimer & Co., where he served as Vice President of the Institutional Derivatives division. In 1989, he co-founded Greenstein Rosenthal Capital. He co-founded Quellos Group, a global alternative investment management firm which was acquired by BlackRock for over $1 billion. Greenstein currently serves as president of YIS Capital, a Seattle-based diversified private investment firm focusing on alternative assets.

GREENSTEIN FAMILY FOUNDATION: The foundation focuses on five core areas of giving: Jewish continuity, community support, medical research, education, and the arts. More specifically, it supports causes that promote the preservation of Jewish values for future generations; local initiatives in the Seattle area that promote equal access to food, shelter, safety and education; and world-class initiatives in the medical research and healthcare arenas. The foundation also believes education and art are critical parts of society. Grantees have included United Way of King County, College Success Foundation, Hope for Heroism, Northwest Film Forum, Friends of Israel Defense Forces, and Hillel. The foundation has also worked with Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. Judy co-founded Stolen Youth, dedicated to raising funds and awareness to “support the rescue and recovery of sexually exploited youth in Seattle and greater King County.”

GREENSTEIN LAB: In 2015, the Greensteins launched Greenstein Lab, a multipurpose space for exhibiting and promoting contemporary art. Exhibitions at The Lab feature postwar modern and contemporary works of painting, photography, and sculpture from an international roster of artists.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family to stick with established interests for now. The couple’s growing interest in art and their collection should be on the radar of Seattle area fundraisers in particular.
