OVERVIEW: Steven Rattner, Maureen White and their family conduct their philanthropy through the Rattner Family Foundation. BACKGROUND: Steven Rattner graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Brown University. He was managing director at Morgan Stanley and joined Lazard Frères & Co. in 1989 as a general partner. Rattner was a Co-Founder and Managing Principal at Quadrangle Group LLC at GT Brands LLC from 2000 to 2009 and serves as chairman and CEO at Willett Advisors. He was also Counselor to the Secretary of the Treasury and led the Obama Administration’s effort to restructure the automobile industry.

POLICY & GLOBAL: Steven Rattner was the “car czar” during the Obama Administration. His wife Maureen has been active in politics and policy for years; she was Senior Advisor on Humanitarian Issues in the Office of the Special Representation to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the U.S. Department of State. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University

The couple have supported International Rescue Committee and Center for Global Development (Maureen is on the board of both), as well as the Council on Foreign Relations, RFK Foundation for Justice & Human Rights, the Clinton Foundation, and Brookings Institution, where Rattner is on the board.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Rattner supports his alma mater, Brown University. Other grantees include Columbia University, Sesame Workshop, NYC Outward Bound Schools, and Harvard Law School.

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New-York Historical Society, and New York Public Library.

HEALTH: Rattner and White have supported medical organizations such as Weill Cornell Medical College, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

OTHER: The couple has made smaller donations to religious organizations such as Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center and Church of St. Ignatius Loyola.
