OVERVIEW: Anne McNulty and her late husband John founded the John P. and Anne Welsh McNulty Foundation in 1985. Currently available tax filings indicate that the foundation awarded $3.5 million in grants in 2016.The foundation aims “to inspire, develop and drive leaders to solve the most critical challenges of our time” and supports education, leadership, and the arts.
BACKGROUND: A Philadelphia native, Anne Welsh McNulty graduated from Villanova University and earned an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She was a managing director of Goldman Sachs and served as a senior executive of the Goldman Sachs Hedge Fund Strategies Group. McNulty went on to cofound JBK Partners, a real estate company based in Florida. John McNulty was a graduate of St. Joseph’s University and Wharton.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION & LEADERSHIP: McNulty’s main priority in the area of education is leadership development. In partnership with the Aspen Institute, McNulty established the annual John P. McNulty Prize, a $100,000 award for “individuals who are using their exceptional leadership abilities, entrepreneurial spirit and private sector talents to address the world’s toughest challenges.” One recent prize winner, Mehrdad Baghai, is a financial executive who organizes young people who stand against hate, intolerance and extremism. The McNulty Foundation also gave $10 million to Wharton to create the Anne and John McNulty Leadership Program. At Villanova, where Anne McNulty serves on the board of trustees, the foundation endowed the Anne Welsh McNulty Institute for Women’s Leadership. Other past education grantees include Washington Middle School for Girls, the Haitian Education and Leadership Program, Hunter College, St. Joseph’s University and Ashesi University of Accra, Ghana.
ARTS & CULTURE: McNulty has supported arts and culture in New York City. Past grantees include the Joyce Theater, Film Forum, the Classic Stage Company, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Opera. Outside of New York, she has supported the Aspen Art Museum.
HEALTH: McNulty’s past grantees in the area of health include the American Cancer Society, the Peer Health Exchange and the Global Genes Project, an organization that advocates for individuals suffering from rare and genetic diseases.
HUMANITARIAN & YOUTH: The McNulty Foundation’s work in this area has prioritized underserved and underprivileged children around the world. Past grantees include the Salvadorian American Humanitarian Foundation, the Child Mind Institute, the Naples Children and Education Foundation and the Seattle International Foundation, which "supports worldwide poverty alleviation efforts through grant-making and other activities."
