BACKGROUND: Thomas Secunda grew up in Bethpage, New York, and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees mathematics from Binghamton University. He started his career in the financial industry as a fixed-income trader at Morgan Stanley and also worked at Salomon Brothers. He is a co-founder of Bloomberg L.P. media company.

ISSUES:

ENVIRONMENT: Thomas Secunda once served as the chairman of the board of trustees of the National Parks Conservation Association. s’ philanthropy in this area has prioritized the have steadily supported the National Parks Conservation Association. The Secunda Family Foundation has also supported many organizations in the New York City area, including the Friends of Westchester County Parks, Wave Hill, the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy, the Governor’s Island Alliance and Scenic Hudson.

ARTS & CULTURE: The Secundas’ arts and culture philanthropy has also prioritized the New York area. Past grantees include the Intrepid Museum Foundation, the Manhattan Theatre Club, the Hudson Stage Company, the Jacob Burns Film Center, the Little Orchestra Society and the Public Art Fund. Outside of New York, they have supported the Opera Training Institute of Chicago.

EDUCATION: The Secundas have steadily supported Thomas’s alma mater, Binghamton University, as well as other schools that family members have attended. Additional education funding has been directed toward Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University and Harvey Mudd College.

HEALTH: The couple has made modest donations to health organizations including the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Lupus Research Alliance and the Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine.
