OVERVIEW: Timothy and Michele Barakett conduct their philanthropy through the Timothy and Michele Barakett Foundation, which gave away around $10 million in a recent year. Grantmaking includes educational and health causes. The family is interested in allergy research, in part for personal reasons.

BACKGROUND: Canadian native Timothy R. Barakett graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. He played ice hockey in college, was drafted by the New Jersey Devils, and was a member of Team Canada. Barakett was a managing director at Junction Advisors and went on to found Atticus Capital. He is the chairman of TRB Advisors, a private investment firm formed to manage his family’s capital.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Barakett steadily supports his alma mater, Harvard. He was a first-generation college student and made his first donation to the school in 1997, with the couple's first scholarship fund. Later, he and Michelle gave $25 million to The Harvard Campaign for Arts and Sciences. They established two new funds for undergraduate students and committed $1 million to the hockey program. The couple have also supported Trevor Day School, Dalton School (Barakett is a trustee), The School of American Ballet, and The Episcopal School. Further support has gone to NYU's Center for Ballet and the Arts.

HEALTH: The Barketts have a daughter with a peanut allergy. They have supported the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research at Stanford University and pumped millions into Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health. Other grantees include Mt. Sinai Dubin Breast Center, NYU Child Study Center, American Cancer Society, and New York Presbyterian Hospital

ARTS & CULTURE: The couple have steadily supported Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. Other grantees include New York Public Library and New York City Ballet.

HUMAN RIGHTS & ENVIRONMENT: The Barakett foundation has supported Amazon Watch, The Marshall Project, Freedom to Marry, Women for Afghan Women, Bottomless Closet, and Robin Hood Foundation

LOOKING FORWARD: Barakett wound down Atticus Capital to focus more on other engagements, including philanthropy, so expect the Baraketts' giving to continue and even deepen.
