OVERVIEW: Brett and Meaghan Barakett conduct their philanthropy through the Brett Barakett Foundation, which gave away around $750,000 in 2018 and over $4.1 million from 2013 to 2018. Grantmaking areas include education and academic scholarship.

BACKGROUND: A Canadian citizen, Brett Barakett has an HBA from Ivey Business School at Western University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Barakett worked at Moore Capital Management and Salomon Brothers. He is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Tremblant Capital Group, a global alternative asset management firm focused on public equity investments.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Baraketts have supported Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich, Ivey Business School, Lower Canada College, New York University, Greenwich Academy, Khan Academy, and Teach for America. The Baraketts are big supporters of Harvard Business School, which received a $1 million grant from their foundation in 2017.

Additional grant support has gone to One Girl Inc., which "seeks to advance the plight of women at home and abroad by developing its members into social conscious change agents through leadership training, community service, and transformative work using yoga and meditation techniques." Meaghan, a former Miss New York USA, founded One Girl and serves as executive director.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees include Breast Cancer AllianceGreenwich Hospital Foundation, Covenant House, and Memorial Sloan Kettering.

OTHER: Barakett has coached hockey in his community. The couple has supported Canadian Hockey Foundation and USA Hockey Foundation. Barakett has also supported Canadian outfit the Calgary Foundation

LOOKING FORWARD: Barakett is still very much engaged in business. His giving may expand in the coming years.
