In 2009, Atalanta Sosnoff Capital founder Martin T. Sosnoff and his wife Toni gave a $5 million gift to American Ballet Theatre (ABT) to endow new ballet works commissioned by the company. It's not every day that we see an individual gift this large in the realm of the performing arts, and in fact, the couple's gift was the largest single donation from an individual to ABT. The couple has supported ABT for more than two decades now, and Sosnoff currently serves as chair of the investment committee.
What of the Sosnoff's arts giving since this gift?
Well, the couple's Martin and Toni Sosnoff Foundation has continued to support ABT. In the 2014 fiscal year, the Sonnoffs gave close to $640,000 to Ballet Theatre Foundation, as well as similar sums in another recent year.
Other recent arts grantees include Palm Beach Opera, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Manhattan Theatre Club, Roundabout Theater Company, Signature Theater Company, and the Met Opera. The couple also has an interest in film and has funded the Tribeca Film Festival and the Woodstock Film Festival. The couple recently moved from New York to Florida and this may emerge as another important region of giving.
Besides the performing arts, the Sosnoffs are avid collectors of contemporary art and regularly send support to museums, including institutions like the The Met, the Guggenheim, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts- Houston.
The Sosnoffs have also funded the arts at colleges and universities. Toni Sosnoff graduated with a drama degree from Hofstra University and the couple recently funded a theater at Hofstra that was renamed the Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater. It's tough to talk about this couple's giving without bringing up Bard College, where Sosnoff was a trustee for two decades and which the couple recently gave $764,000 via their foundation. The couple's philanthropy at Bard has heavily involved the Fisher Center for Performing Arts, the site of the Sosnoff Theater. Both Sosnoff and Toni serrve on the Fisher Center's advisory board.
The Martin and Toni Sosnoff Foundation's grantmaking also involves health and animals. Sosnoff is an active competitor in dressage, and Toni has maintained an active breeding and exhibition program for both standard and toy poodles for some 25 years.
