Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation: Grants for Music

OVERVIEW: Not to be confused with the Getty Foundation established by their father, J. Paul Getty, the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation primarily gives support to symphonies, opera companies, and educational institutions. Most of their grantmaking is based in California, but not all of it.

IP TAKE: This is another foundation that does not disclose anything about their grantmaking process and has no web presence. Getting their attention will be tougher than usual.

PROFILE: Based in San Francisco, the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation is one of the top ten foundations that award arts grants in California. Though it does not exclusively restrict its grantmaking to California, it does prioritize organizations based in the state and distributes most of its funding there.

The Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation awards over $6 million each year to hundreds of music organizations throughout the country, including some recent grants to Youth Orchestra of the Americas in Arlington, VA ($7,500), the Portland Youth Philharmonic Association in Portland, OR ($4,000), and the Ravinia Festival Association in Highland Park, IL ($10,000).

While most of the foundation's grantmaking centers around California-based operations (many with an educational element), it definitely distributes its funding beyond state lines. Most of its grants range from $2,000 to $50,000. The foundation has been known to issue grants in much higher amounts, but it does not happen very often.

Much of the foundation's funding is done through re-granting programs with partnership organizations like the League of American Orchestras, which currently administers a program that supports community involvement through local orchestras. Since there is not a whole lot of information out there about how the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation does its grantmaking, new grantseekers might try starting with organizations like the League of American Orchestras when trying to gain access to its music funds.

The Foundation does not maintain a website and does not issue calls for proposals.
