OVERVIEW: Robert and Patricia Herbold move their philanthropy through the Herbold Foundation, which primarily awards scholarships to students majoring in science, technology, math, or engineering.
BACKGROUND: Robert J. Herbold graduated with a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Cincinnati and both a master’s degree in mathematics and a Ph.D. in computer science from Case Western Reserve University. Herbold spent 26 years at Procter & Gamble Company. In 1994, he joined Microsoft as executive vice president and chief operating officer,en retiring in 2001.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION & YOUTH: Herbold has endowed two chairs at Case Western Reserve University: the Robert J. Herbold Professor of Informatics and Analytics and the Robert J. Herbold Professor of Biomedical Engineering, both in the Case School of Engineering. He also endowed the Robert J. Herbold Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Washington and funded the Herbold Computational Biology Program at the Hutchison Cancer Research Center.
Via their foundation, the family focuses on scholarships to STEM students at places like Stanford University, California Polytechnic State University, Dartmouth College, Harvey Mudd College, and Northwestern University.
The Herbolds have upported Horatio Alger Association, of which Patricia is a member. Patricia rose from humble beginnings to work as a chemist, attorney, local Ohio mayor, and later, ambassador to the Republic of Singapore.
OTHER: The family has supported American Civil Rights Institute, Heritage Foundation, and Hoover Institute. Herbold seems interested in free-market principles.
